Dear Members,

Today is Lag B’omer and I hope that you are enjoying the day and the cessation, or respite (depending on one’s minhag) of the observances of mourning during this time period. More importantly, it is my wish that we have learned valuable lessons from the tragic deaths of Rabbi Akiva’s disciples and have resolved to treat each other with greater dignity and respect so that we can indeed enter into Shavuot as a unified people.

On that latter note I am excited to share with you that as an outgrowth of our working together with the Jewish Family Experience we will be hosting a bar mitzvah this upcoming Shabbat afternoon. There will be an influx of guests in the shul and I am confident that we will welcome them with warmth and grace as is our pattern at Green Road Synagogue.

Thankfully the shul will be having a busy Shabbat independently as Rabbi Granatstein has returned from Israel and will be resuming his Gemara class, and we will be welcoming a guest lecturer for seudat shlishit. Professor Aaron Koller, a distinguished scholar at Yeshiva University, will be delivering a talk entitled “Sefirat ha-Omer and Counting to Perfection: Shavuot, the Yovel, and the Human-Divine partnership”. I look forward to his informative and enlightening remarks and invite you to come hear him as well.

Finally, I am excited about the upcoming dinner next week where we will have an opportunity to honor, and express hakarat hatov, to Rabbi and Malka Granatstein for their leadership and dedication to both the shul and the community. It will surely be a memorable evening that we will experience together as a kehilla.

Shabbat shalom.

Rabbi Binyamin Blau

Dear members,

I hope that you all had a meaningful and enjoyable Pesach. We had a beautiful Yom Tov at Green Road Synagogue and I want to thank all those who lead the davening and/or performed the kriot for creating that experience. A special thank you is due to our two gabbaim – Ben Baskin and Herzl Ginsburg – for skillfully orchestrating the shul’s proceedings throughout the chag.

We are entering into an intensely emotional time of the year starting with our remembrance of the Holocaust today and then shifting our focus to the state of Israel as we first honor the memory of the fallen before celebrating the joy of our return to our homeland with the creation of Medinat Yisrael. While these events are critical for all of Jewry, there is a special resonance for the members of our synagogue. Green Road Synagogue was built by survivors who were determined to continue the Judaism of their ancestors and pass it on to future generations. Our shul has always passionately supported the State of Israel and is proud of our members who have served, and who presently serve, in the Israel Defence Forces.

We remain steadfast in these beliefs as we mourn the past that was lost in Europe, appreciate the gift of Israel that has been bestowed upon us, and recognize the ongoing sacrifices needed to insure the survival of our state.

May you all have a shabbat shalom.

Respectfully yours,

Rabbi Blau

Dear Members,

I know that we are in the midst of our preparations for Pesach so I just want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Chag Kasher V’Samaeach. May you enjoy your families and your sederim as we celebrate the holiday that formed our identity as the Jewish people.

As a small bonus I would like to share with you the latest volume of Yeshiva University’s Shabbat Table Discussion project, entitled “Kindness is Priceless,” that was designed especially for Pesach. You can access it at http://www.yutorah.org/shabbattable.

Once again may you have a wonderful yom tov.

Respectfully yours,
Rabbi Binyamin Blau
